About me
Hello lovely people!
I'm Sarah, a highly motivated and innovative scientist with 5+ years of experience in molecular and cell biology and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry gained during my doctoral studies and a year working in a national reference laboratory in the Netherlands. Striving to make a meaningful impact to science and healthcare, I love to collaborate, communicate my research to a range of audiences, and help future scientists grow through education and mentorship. I'm a Philomath, which means I love learning new things, so you will often find me reading about cutting edge technology and new research trends, and seeing how I can apply them to my research and everyday life. I often have fun ideas! I enjoy baking, hiking, nature photography, gardening and advocating for various causes. I like to share my photographs and facts about wildlife @whisperingwildlife and photographs on Viewbug. |
Research Summary
Endometrial stromal cells in the mucosal lining of the uterus, the endometrium, transform into specialised decidual cells in preparation for pregnancy. Interestingly, this process, decidualization, is specific to 1.5% of mammals including humans. My doctoral research focussed on studying metabolites secreted by the cells, the exometabolome, and how this connects to transcriptomic regulation during decidualization. This has been beneficial in understanding the interplay between the metabolism, regulation in the endometrium, and reproductive disorders.
Alongside my main PhD project, I profiled autoantibodies in endometriosis and completed omics analysis of immune cells from humanised mice cancer models. |
Scientific Illustration
Do you need a scientific illustration? I am a freelance scientific illustrator and can design interesting and beautiful figures that inform. I will be happy to discuss a new project and can be contacted via my website!
Mentorship
I really enjoy inspiring future scientists, and providing mentorship and tips to achieve within Science. I believe that science is built on unique perspectives and innovation. A career in Science may be a challenge and will need resilience, dedication and willingness to learn, but you can really flourish. We all think differently, work differently, but together we can really make a meaningful impact. I'd recommend building a great support network of role-models that inspire you, and help you grow! I have no doubt you CAN become a SCIENTIST.
